World Vision celebrates International Day of the Girl Child with awareness program

MANILA — In celebration of the 10th anniversary of the International Day of the Girl Child, World Vision invited children in Manila for a program that educates them of what are the rights that every girl should enjoy.

The event invited 21 children from the Baseco Inter-Agency Network for the celebration.

Among the topics discussed during the said event were the risks of teenage pregnancy, as well as an overview of the local Barangay (village) Children’s Association (BCA). The BCA consists of select youth from the area, aged 10 to 14, who will act as their “voice” for the community.

“It is important to listen to their voices and let them identify the issues they are facing especially during this pandemic. When they feel safe and heard, they will be encourged to do something and act together in creating a safe and caring community,” says Abigail Joy Bayucan, World Vision Program Officer in Manila.

The United Nations declared that  International Day of the Girl Child is observed every Oct. 11, with this year being its 10th year. This observance is to promote more opportunities for girls, as well as to promote gender equality in countries where girls face discrimination due to their gender.

With the observance of the International Day of the Girl Child, among those that are in the focal point are girls having the right to have an education, medical care, legal rights and protection from violence and from forced child marriage.
