World Vision reaches more than 1,000 Nina-hit families
25-year old Josalyn is one of the 1,198 families who couldn’t help but smile after checking the boxes of relief items they received.
“These are helpful to us especially during these times. It gets cold at night. Mosquitoes are everywhere due to debris. We only share a blanket that we borrowed from a relative,” she shares.
Her family now lives with a relative after their house was decimated by the typhoon. Her husband, a construction worker, has been without income for several days after the typhoon.
According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), about 2.2 million people were affected by typhoon Nina (international name Nock-ten). Reports also show that 228,538 houses were damaged while 85,229 were totally destroyed. The extent of damage prompted at least six provinces, including Camarines Sur, to declare state of calamity.
To respond to the needs of the people, World Vision immediately mobilised its emergency response team. Relief items that include hygiene kits (bath and laundry soaps, malong, toothpaste, toothbrushes, sanitary pads, nail cutter, underwear for men and women) and other essentials like fleece blankets, sleeping mats and mosquito nets were provided to the communities of Sagnay and Lagonoy, Camarines Sur.
“We thank everyone who helped World Vision provide these emergency essentials to the typhoon-affected communities. Your generosity also allowed us to provide support even to areas that are hard to access during the rainy season,” shares Associate Operations Director for Luzon, Annie Ronquillo.
In partnership with Jersey Oversees Aid Commission (JOAC), World Vision was able to reach more than 400 families or 2,000 people in the coastal towns of Bocogan and Del Carmen in Lagonoy. The towns, which can only be reached by boat in 5 to 10 minutes from the Port of Tinambac, were two of the severely devastated areas in Camarines Sur.World Vision/February 20, 2017
