A Batangueña’s dream

Venus, a ten-year old, has lived in a small community in Batangas all her life. She loves watching television shows, playing with her friends and taking care of their pet pigeons–more than 10 of them!

Venus’ father works as a fisherman and wakes up as early as 3 in the morning. Her mother stays at home to care for her and her older brother since they are both studying. Despite the father’s meager earnings, he and Venus’ mother are able to make ends meet and make sure that they eat healthy and are able to attend school.

“My husband’s earnings are just enough for our daily needs. So when he doesn’t earn for a day, I’m compelled to borrow from our neighbors so we can put food on the table. I recently applied for a position in a newly constructed supermarket in the city. I hope I get accepted so I can help provide for my family,” Elizabeth, Venus’ mother, confesses.

Venus works hard not only to reward her parents for their sacrifices but also to fulfill her dreams of becoming a teacher and helping other children someday. Currently the Top 3 in her class, Venus gets to represent her school in various competitions. Her medals and awards are the pride of her parents. She hopes to keep making them proud by aiming higher and succeeding in life.

“I have three goals this year: be the Top 1 in my class, win the contests I will be participating in, and have a sponsor,” Venus passionately shared.

Her parents fully support the goals Venus has set for herself. Her mother simply said, “All I want is for my children to graduate from college.”

World Vision in the Philippines works in Venus’ community through child sponsorship and various economic development projects. Her family is a recipient of a livelihood program where families are given pigs to take care of and hopefully profit from.
