World Vision rolls out assistance to Nina-affected areas in Bicol

Following the devastation brought by Typhoon Nock-ten (local name Nina) in the Bicol region, World Vision responds and calls for support to provide more emergency relief for the hard-hit areas in Albay and Camarines Sur.

“We hope to initially assist 2,000 families in Albay and Camarines Sur. Our team is already on the ground to distribute hygiene kits containing toothbrush, toothpaste, underwear, bath and laundry soaps, sanitary napkins, nail cutter and other non-food items like mosquito nets and blankets to at least 660 families this week,” says World Vision acting National Director Rommel Fuerte.

In the coastal community of Camarines Sur, 46-year old Cynthia, who was recently widowed before the storm, could not hide her despair after Typhoon Nock-ten snatched their humble home.

“I feel bad when my 3-year old child cries at night because it’s too cold,” she shares. On her own, she builds a makeshift structure to temporarily shelter her two grieving kids. Cynthia makes wigs for a living. She earns at least Php 700 (USD14) a week, but even her source of income was also disrupted by the typhoon.

According to the latest NDRRMC report, typhoon Nock-ten damaged more than 240,000 houses, including 70,000 in the Bicol provinces alone.

To complement the ongoing government-led relief efforts, World Vision also aims to provide shelter repair kits to displaced families like Cynthia’s.

“We appeal to everyone to help us stand with the typhoon survivors. All the support we can give for the relief efforts would go a long way. World Vision is especially concerned with the well-being of children who are most vulnerable in these situations,” appeals Jun Godornes, World Vision director for Resources Development.

Typhoon Nock-ten made its first landfall, last Christmas Day (December 25), in Catanduanes and had seven more landfalls before it left the Philippine Area of Responsibility last December 27. The typhoon left more than 1.9 million people affected, and rendered at least 151 areas without electricity. A state of calamity has been declared in the provinces of Catanduanes, Camarines Sur and Albay in the Bicol region, Batangas and Quezon in CALABARZON, and the province of Marinduque in MIMAROPA.World Vision/January 4, 2017
