Cesca Litton visits sponsored child in Antique

Child sponsorship is a meaningful experience and bond between two people: the sponsor and the sponsored child. It is a life-changing journey as they share their lives and love for each other through letters and sponsor visits.

Sponsor visits allow the sponsor and the sponsored child to forge stronger ties by sharing a memorable moment together -- making child sponsorship, truly, a lasting and fulfilling relationship.

Television host Cesca Litton has always wanted to visit her sponsored child, 11-year-old Dian, from Antique. The busy host, also a bride-to-be, took time on Saturday to fly to the Visayan province to finally meet her sponsored child in person. Cesca is the host of 'Sports Desk', a nightly sports program on Solar News (now, CNN Philippines).

"Ang alam ko lang sa kanya, mahilig siya sa Math!" Cesca mused during the trip. Antique is a three-hour-long drive from the Iloilo airport, which was also an hour flight away from Manila.

"I am very excited to finally meet her, to know more about her. Right now, I only know her name, her age, and her favorite subject and I have only seen her picture on the profile," said Cesca, who was joined by her fiance, Tyke Kalaw. The couple are getting married in February next year.

Tyke was just as excited to meet Cesca's sponsored child. "This is my first outreach activity with Cesca and I think this [child sponsorship] is absolutely something we would like to do as a couple for the rest of our lives."

Meanwhile, at a restaurant, Dian, her mother Dally, older brother Ian and her friends were waiting for their guests. Dian just finished writing a Christmas card to her sponsor, whom she was also eager to finally meet.

Sponsor Visit

"Sana po'y nasa mabuti kayong kalagayan at malayo sa sakit," Dian wrote.

The youngest in a brood of four, and the only girl in the family, Dian said she is grateful to Cesca for sponsoring her. Like many families in the Visayas region, Dian's was not spared from the wrath of typhoon Yolanda last year. The disaster had not only destroyed part of their home, but also affected the livelihood of her father, a fisherman.

As a sponsored child, Dian's family was one of the 702 beneficiaries of World Vision's shelter kit distribution. The building materials given to her family has helped them restore their kitchen which was damaged by the typhoon.

"Nagpapasalamat po talaga ako sa kanya [Cesca] at tinutulungan po niya kami," the girl said of her sponsor.

"Masaya din po ako, kasi kahit malayo ang Maynila, dumalaw po siya sa akin."

Loud cheers erupted from the back of the room as Cesca approached Dian from behind. Dian's friends, also sponsored children, were very happy that she has now met her sponsor.

"Saan ka nag-aaral, anong grade mo na?" Cesca asked Dian, wanting to learn as much about her as she could.

Dian, a bit shy at first, warmed up eventually and even performed in front of her sponsor. She and her friends sang 'Say a Little Prayer' which was popularized in the movie 'My Bestfriend's Wedding' -- a gift for Ceska and Tyke's upcoming nuptials. Dian also sang a solo number.

"Maganda pala ang boses mo!" exclaimed the proud sponsor after the performance.

Cesca became emotional when Dian presented her with a scrapbook she made with photos of her family, classmates and friends.

"Nagpapasalamat po ako sa kabutihan ninyo. Sana huwag po kayong magsasawa sa pagtulong," read Dian's letter for Cesca.

To which Cesca replied, "Huwag kang mag-aalala. Hanggang mag-high school ka, I will be here for you."

"Thank you for giving me the opportunity to do something good," a teary-eyed Cesca told Dian.

As a parting gift, Dian made her sponsor pink-colored loombands, which Cesca wore all the way back home in Manila. Dian and Ian also received gifts from Cesca and Tyke.

"It was a wonderful, wonderful experience. Now I know more about my sponsored child than just her favorite subject!" Cesca said, bringing with her fond memories of their first meeting.
