World Vision puts up playground and mural benches as child-friendly spaces in Marawi

As part of World Vision’s goal to promote child safety and peace, playgrounds and mural benches are set up in Marawi City.

Through the Marawi Peace and Protection Project, World Vision was able to build playgrounds three schools in Marawi City and 6 mural benches are built in schools and displacement sites.

The intervention is an answer to a research finding conducted by World Vision indicating that only 61% of children in Marawi feel safe. “The percentage is 9% below the threshold or acceptable level, which is alarming. Although the number of respondents is just a fraction of all the children in Marawi, no child is supposed to feel threatened in his or her own community,” said Rommel V. Fuerte, Executive Director of World Vision in the Philippines.

The high rate of children feeling unsafe in their environment can be attributed to the armed-conflict that happened in the city. “It has been two years since the warfare happened in the city. As the city rebuilds, we ensure that there are spaces in the community where children can play and feel safe,” shares Adonis Casinillo, the response manager of World Vision’s Marawi Response. “The bench murals showcase the colorful Marawi culture while promoting peace.”

The Marawi Peace and Protection Project is a 1-year project that is part of the recovery phase of World Vision’s Marawi Armed-conflict Response. The World Vision Korea-funded project was launched last July 2018 to engage the Maranao youth and children in peacebuilding activities. The project also aims to strengthen the child-protection mechanisms in schools and in the community.
