KOICA and World Vision builds new communal comfort rooms and renovated classroom blocks in Samar public schools

Tacloban City – The partnership between the Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and World Vision resulted to the renovation of classrooms and construction of communal comfort rooms in Sta. Rita, a municipality in Samar province.

The constructed and renovated communal comfort rooms were officially turned over to the school recipients through an official turn over ceremony last December 10, 2021. While the classrooms are expected to reach full completion this first quarter of the year.

During the ceremony, KOICA and World Vision turned over one fully-constructed 3-seater comfort room facility each for five public elementary schools. While one school received a renovated 4-seater CR facility.

“This turn over ceremony is our first step of providing safe environment for children in schools. In this dire times, proper hygiene and sanitation is a must. These facilities will be beneficial to the students and the schools,” shared Mr. Jhonghee Park, KOICA Deputy Country Director.

The construction and renovation project is part of the Safe Schools project funded by KOICA and implemented by World Vision. The project aims to improve learning environment in both face to face and distance modality. This can be done by providing safe and quality WASH facilities and provision of distance learning materials.

The program also targets to produce learning materials to create inclusive learning environment. This can be achieved by utilizing learning technologies such as KitKit School and UL Drive, conduct capacity building to teachers and caregivers, and creation of community support mechanism,

Lastly, the program also intends to equip schools to better respond against natural disasters including infectious diseases.

“We are happy that we are able to deliver the construction and renovation of comfort rooms successfully. Construction is only the first step of achieving the goal but sustaining it is another thing. We can only sustain these projects if we work together along with the schools and students in maintaining and keeping the facilities clean,” said Ping Sacala, the World Vision Program Manager of the Safe Schools Program.
