Iloilo town celebrates Breastfeeding Awareness Week

Iloilo City supports the Breastfeeding Awareness Week by conducting a breastfeeding counseling simultaneously in each barangay. In the village of Arevalo, around 30 breastfeeding mothers, along with health workers, gather to share proper breastfeeding information and other nutrition practices.

World Breastfeeding week is held annually between the 1st – 7th of August to encourage breastfeeding and improve the health of babies around the world. Philippines is one of the 120 countries that observe this awareness week.

“It is important that families, especially breastfeeding moms, know information about proper breastfeeding,” shares Luisa C. Hipolito, R.N., public health nurse of the said village. “This week is just the highlight of this awareness. It is encouraged that breastfeeding should be advocated all year round.”

Among the participants is Frederico, a grandfather in his 60s. He accompanied her daughter who is a mother of twin infants. He said that men should support breastfeeding women in the family because it is not an easy task. “I support my daughter in taking care of her babies. I want my grandchildren to be healthy as they can be,” he said.

World Vision supports the Breastfeeding awareness week by providing trainings to community health workers. The organizations also partners with the local government, such as the town of Arevalo, to strengthen the advocacy on breastfeeding.
