Running with purpose: How Norman’s social cause gave lifelong help to children in Antique

Norman Garcia, a Filipino athlete based in Canada, is an active supporter of World Vision. As a runner, he raises awareness and funds for children by joining fun runs and marathons barefooted.

“I run barefoot so they don’t have to,” says Norman as he explains his unique way of helping children in need. Many individuals have showed support to the runner and helped him reach his goal of racing funds to help children back in the Philippines.

Norman’s feat of running kilometers of cement road barefooted has borne fruit. On November 24, a newly furbished classroom was officially turned over to a remote community in Antique. The funds raised from Norman’s runs were used to repair the roofing and the walls of a pre-school classroom. Reading materials, chairs, tables, cabinets and other school facilities were all donated to improve the learning environment of the preschoolers.

“Nakikiisa ako sa inyong paniniwala na ang pinaka-epektibong paraan sa paghubog ng tao ay edukasyon,” Norman says in a message to the community. “Nawa’y hindi kumupas ang inyong kasigasigan sa proyektong ito. Mananatili akong susuporta sa inyo. Congratulations!”

In return, the community organized a thanksgiving ceremony for their generous donors. Parents and students showcased their talents and key community leaders expressed their message of gratitude.

“Education is the key to every person’s success. World Vision and its donors’ support to renovate the classroom will not just help the current preschoolers but also more generations of young learners,” shares preschool teacher Felicitas Bandiola.World Vision/January 4, 2018
