Strengthening teachers’ role in protecting children online 

As children spend more time online for learning, communication, and entertainment, they also face increasing risks in the digital space. Recognizing teacher’s vital role in promoting safe and responsible digital engagement, World Vision Philippines is equipping educators with the knowledge and skills to help protect children online.  

Through its Project Strengthening Action for Family Empowerment (SAFE), World Vision Philippines, in partnership with the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), conducted a three-day Digital Safety Training for teachers from Cordova, Cebu from May 25 to 27. The training equipped educators with practical knowledge and skills on digital citizenship, online safety, privacy and data protection, and child safeguarding in digital environments. 

According to the US-based National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), more than 1.7 million cyber tipline reports linked to possible online child sexual exploitation originated from the Philippines in 2024, highlighting the continuing risks children face in digital spaces. While significant progress has been made in strengthening child protection systems, many cases remain unreported due to limited awareness of reporting mechanisms and support services. In Central Visayas, the threat remains a concern, with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Field Office VII recording seven cases of Online Sexual Abuse and Exploitation of Children (OSAEC) from January to June 2026 alone. 

As schools continue to integrate technology into teaching and learning, teachers play a critical role in ensuring that children not only benefit from digital innovation but are also protected from online risks. The training emphasized that safeguarding children includes protecting their personal information, promoting responsible online behavior, and creating safer digital learning environments.  

For many participants, the workshop highlighted the importance of data privacy as an essential part of child protection. 

“Our three-day Digital Safety Awareness seminar made a meaningful impact on us as educators, especially in protecting the data privacy rights of our school children. This training is vital today as education continues to embrace digitalization while ensuring the safety and welfare of our learners,” shared teacher Honeylyn. 

The sessions also encouraged teachers to become advocates for safe and responsible technology use by integrating digital safety principles into their classrooms and everyday interactions with students. Beyond technical knowledge, participants reflected on how simple practices such as protecting personal information, recognizing online threats, and promoting respectful digital behavior can help create safer online experiences for children. 

“Children deserve to explore the digital world with confidence and protection,” said teacher Juvelyn. “As educators, we now have a greater responsibility to guide them not only academically but also in becoming responsible and safe digital citizens.” 

Digital Safety is one of the core components of World Vision’s Project SAFE, which works to protect children and young people from abuse, exploitation, violence, and other forms of harm, including those occurring through digital platforms. By strengthening the knowledge and capacity of educators, Project SAFE continues to support communities where children can learn, grow, and thrive safely both offline and online.
