Philippines braces for Super Typhoon Noru

MANILA | September 25 — Luzon, the biggest island in the Philippines, is bracing for the impact of Super Typhoon Noru (local name Karding) which is expected to landfall this afternoon likely in Polillo Island, situated in the Luzon province of Quezon, south of Manila, based on the morning news report.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) reports as of 11 am (Philippine time) that Super Typhoon Noru is spotted 175 kilometers east of Infanta, Quezon, a province east of Luzon.

Super Typhoon Noru packs maximum sustained winds of 195 kilometers per hour (kph) and gustiness of up to 240 kph. It first entered the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) on Thursday night, Sept. 22, and became a super typhoon on Sunday “after a period of explosive intensification”, PAGASA said.

Super Typhoon Noru is the second super typhoon to enter the Philippines PAR for 2022, following Super Typhoon Hinnamnor (local name Henry) earlier this month.

Weather authority PAGASA issues Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) #5 over the Polillo Island and the extreme northern portion of Quezon province. Under TCWS #5, residents are warned of possible torrential rains and winds which could bring “widespread damage to high-risk structures.”

Other storm warning signals remain hoisted in other areas of Luzon, including Pangasinan, Batangas and Metro Manila.

World Vision continues to coordinate with the local government offices and key agencies where it has assisted communities along the typhoon’s possible path.In Luzon, World Vision currently assists about 21,000 children in Metro Manila cities and in the provinces of Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Albay, Sorsogon, Pangasinan, and Batangas.

Super Typhoon Noru is forecast to exit the Philippines on Tuesday, Sept. 27.
