Impact of child sponsorship: Angel’s wish came true

Angel, 11 years old, is a grade four student in a World Vision community in Antique. She is a consistent honor student in the class and has received academic awards like the Little Teacher and Eager Beaver.

But if there was one thing the active young student was wishing for, it was a simple school bag.

“When my daughter was not yet part of World Vision, she’d watch the other kids receive school supplies with envy,” says Anna, Angel’s mother. “She really hoped to receive the same. I just told her at the time that someday, she will.”

Angel’s mother works as a house helper and her father is a tricycle driver, who remits half of the day’s income to the tricycle owner.

“What’s left with our income is used for our basic necessities. On days that my husband can’t drive, he goes fishing in the nearby river for our food consumption,” says Anna.

Angel’s parents work hand in hand in raising her and her brother. With prices getting high, being part of World Vision sponsorship program is a blessing to the family.

“We are really grateful for the support. We’ve received hygiene kits at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic and Noche Buena (Christmas Eve) gifts,” Anna says.

Before the school year started, Angel also got her most-awaited wish—a school bag.

“I was so happy because I finally received a school bag! There were even school supplies inside,” Angel shares.

“She was really happy, but I was happier seeing her happy,” Anna adds.

“I am even more motivated to study because the materials were no longer something I had to worry about,” the eleven-year-old says. ###
