From Canada with Love: OFW Joylyn Casison celebrates birthday with 100 children in Cebu
Distance couldn’t stop this overseas worker from sharing her special day—and her blessings—with vulnerable children.
Every birthday is a milestone worth celebrating. But for Joylyn Casison, working thousands of miles away from home, her special day became an opportunity to live out her faith in action.
On May 29, 2025, 100 children and 10 adults (World Vision staff and volunteers) in Cebu gathered for a celebration that went beyond balloons and cake. Joy, as she is known by many, had planned something extraordinary—a birthday party that wasn’t about her. In fact, she wasn’t even at the party because she is based overseas.

“I really believe that giving is one way of giving back to God for all the blessings He has given me, blessings far more than I deserve,” shares Joy. “Ever since, I’ve always prayed that He would use me as an instrument of His love, especially to those who are in need.”
A celebration of gratitude and connection
The day began with joyful praise and worship, filling the air with songs of hope and thanksgiving. The celebrant provided food from Jollibee—a special treat for the children. Beyond the delicious meal, lively parlor games brought everyone together. Laughter echoed through the venue as children competed in friendly challenges and volunteers cheered them on.
The children had also lovingly prepared a Birthday Greetings Corner for Joy. Handmade cards, colorful drawings, and heartfelt messages adorned the space—a testament to how her generosity had already touched their lives.
For Joy, this celebration is rooted in a journey of gratitude. “Nung nag-aaral pa po ako, madami pong tumulong sa akin. Kaya ngayon na nakatapos na po ako at nakakapagtrabaho na rin abroad, gusto ko naman pong maibalik yung kabutihan na iyon sa iba (When I was still in school, a lot of people helped me. That’s why, now that I’ve graduated and I’m working overseas, I want to pay that kindness forward to others),” she explains.

Working overseas comes with sacrifices—time away from family, missed celebrations, and the constant challenge of staying connected to home. Yet Joy found a way to bridge that distance through compassion and purpose.
“It’s my way of saying ‘Thank You, Lord,’ and of being His hands and feet to bless others,” she says, quoting Hebrews 13:16: “And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.”
One celebration, many lives impacted
What makes Joy’s celebration particularly meaningful is its lasting impact. The 100 children who attended didn’t just receive a meal and gifts—they experienced what it means to be valued, celebrated, and seen.
For many of these children, a birthday party might be a rare luxury. Through Joy’s generosity, they discovered their worth and witnessed firsthand how one person’s faith-in-action can transform an ordinary day into an extraordinary memory. Her story exemplifies what it means to bring hope even from afar. Distance becomes irrelevant when love drives action.

“I’m also continuously praying na sana mas marami pa akong matulungan at ma-inspire (that somehow I will get to help and inspire more people) to do the same, to share love and kindness in their own way,” Joy shares.
Ms. Joy’s birthday celebration is more than just one woman’s generous act. It’s an invitation to all of us to consider: How can I turn my blessings into someone else’s breakthrough?
For OFWs working tirelessly abroad, you don’t have to wait until you return home to make an impact. Like Joy, you can partner with World Vision to reach children and communities across the Philippines, ensuring your hard-earned blessings create lasting change.
For families and individuals celebrating milestones—birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, or achievements—you can turn your special occasions into opportunities to spread hope and joy to vulnerable children.
Joylyn Casison’s birthday celebration demonstrates what’s possible when we choose to share our blessings. Her story is a powerful reminder that we don’t have to be wealthy or wait for perfect circumstances to make a difference. What matters is a willing heart and a faith that compels us to act.
