Families in Malabon reel from loss after May 24 fire

Families in Catmon, Malabon are still reeling from their losses after a fire razed the village on May 24, 2018. The incident has decimated at least 450 houses made of light materials and forced about 1,000 individuals to stay in evacuation centres. This has caused the local government to place the village in a state of calamity.

“It’s a tough time for all of them especially for the children who will resume classes this June,” said World Vision staff Chifadel Mabolo.

9-year old Jessel, one of World Vision’s assisted children in the area lost her home to the fire. “Mama was trying to salvage some of our things but we could only get so much. I was able to get my school bag and uniform but the rest of my school supplies was razed by the fire,” she said. Despite her family’s current situation, Jessel is hopeful that her family could rebuild their home soon. She is also determined to go back to school.

To date, the social welfare department reported that around 70% of the families have started putting up temporary shelter in the area. The community expressed their need for hygiene kit, mats, kitchen materials and other emergency essentials.

“World Vision continues to coordinate with the local government and community partners in monitoring the needs and situation of the families. We ask everyone to uphold the community, especially the children, in your prayers,” Mabolo added.
