“Enough” campaign: World Vision leads the fight against hunger and malnutrition

The impacts of poverty and hunger are profound, extending beyond just the immediate deprivation of a child’s well-being and encroaching upon their aspirations for the future. According to data from the Philippine Statistics Authority in 2020, over 11 million children under the age of 5 suffer from malnutrition. “One in three Filipino children aged five and below is severely malnourished. No child should ever have to endure the pain of going to bed hungry,” emphasizes Dr. Herbert Q. Carpio, World Vision National Director, highlighting the increasing urgency of addressing this issue as time progresses.

With 90% of brain development occurring by the age of five, malnutrition during this critical period of a child’s early development can have lasting effects. It can result in poor concentration, affecting academic performance, and also expose children to health risks stemming from vitamin and mineral deficiencies.

Beyond the Philippines, neighboring countries also grapple with the severe consequences of malnutrition. For example, Kham, a third-grader in Laos, often found it challenging to focus in class due to hunger. Coming from an impoverished family, Kham frequently relied on foraging in the nearby forests for food. Livestock, particularly goats, were their main source of income, but tragedy struck when one of their two goats died while Kham’s mother was pregnant.

Upon a visit from World Vision staff to their village, they imparted invaluable knowledge on goat care and provided essential vaccinations. Today, Kham’s family has nine goats, significantly improving their standard of living. World Vision not only restored their means of livelihood but also reignited Kham’s hopes and aspirations. He now harbors dreams of becoming a teacher someday.

“For over 65 years, World Vision has evolved into the largest non-profit organization. We have steadfastly worked towards empowering over 1.5 million children and their families to pave the way for a brighter tomorrow,” remarks Dr. Carpio.

Through the ENOUGH campaign, World Vision now endeavors to sow the seeds of hope even more deeply. You can join this mission! It’s time to declare “enough” to malnutrition and hunger and take action to ensure that every child has more than enough.
