Get to know the Unlimited Band: The making of Tuwing Sasapit ang Pasko

In August 2019, a group of youth leaders from Manila bested nine other contenders in a songwriting contest during the Spiritual Nurture for the Filipino Children (SNFC) Summit. Their winning song entitled “Kabataan Tanglaw Ka” encourages the youth to walk with the Lord. They received a plaque and cash prize which they donated for the youth camp of their local church.

Nakakaoverwhelm talaga. Hindi namin inexpect na kami ang mananalo (It’s overwhelming. We didn’t expect to win),” shares Jeremy, the band drummer, when asked how he felt when they won.

Months after, World Vision got in touch with the group to ask them to write and arrange a special song for children and families this Christmas.

“Tuwing Sasapit ang Pasko (When Christmas Comes)” is an original composition of Unlimited Band, the youth leaders who won in the songwriting contest, which highlights how Christmas is celebrated in the Philippines.

The members include: Jerome, Jeremy, Christalyn, Mhariel, Charity, and Joshua (from left to right).

“Yung lyrics, binase ko sa tradition ng Filipino Christmas (I based the lyrics on Filipino Christmas tradition),” says Joshua, the band’s keyboardist and the primary composer of the aforementioned song. He noted how Christmas is for children and sees this in his family and how they always make it memorable for his little nieces and nephews.

The other band members also shared how the song is a reflection of what they see in their community—the songs, fellowship, and gift-giving.

With Christmas just a few nights away, the band hopes that the song they worked hard on would remind the listeners not only of the joy of this season but also of who we are celebrating: Jesus.
