6 Enjoyable Things to do while on Community Quarantine

Since the onset of the COVID-19 health emergency, our daily routines may have been drastically disrupted or changed. We all know that for our safety and greater good, the government has enforced the enhanced community quarantine in Luzon and other areas nationwide.

This country-wide preventive measure to slow down the outbreak has called for our understanding and cooperation to strictly STAY HOME, be mindful of SOCIAL DISTANCING, and practice hygienic habits like WASHING HANDS properly and disinfecting our household fixtures and materials.

Staying put for 30 days could be a long time. But there are creative, practical and productive ways we can do to make the situation work for you and your household. Here are some ideas:

1. Go beyond your cooking skills.

Now that going to the supermarket will not be as easy as before, it’s time to maximize what we have in the cupboard. Turn a can of sardines into fish patties for the kids, or your mundane eggs into the best breakfast quiche. Even if your family cannot eat out, you can still enjoy appetizing, healthier food at home.

2. Release the bookworm in you.

Finally, you will have time for those books you bought on sale! Pick one on the shelf and feed your mind with knowledge, information and ideas. Spend this time wisely, literally!

3. Get crafty with your kids.

Now’s the time to stash away their tablets and video games and spend some creative time with your kids. Make a scrapbook, build that puzzle, draw, paint, or simply sit down with that coloring book. You can even teach them to sew or do basic carpentry. Not only will these activities unleash your kids’ creativity. Studies show that these also can relieve stress from your family.

4. Declutter.

With all the stress going on outside, it’s time to free yourself from the things that seem to cause one inside our homes. Let go of the things that no longer add value to your wellbeing – clean dirty shelves, wash your sheets, purge the fridge, or throw away broken things that you said you were going to fix but never did. Improve your mood by improving your surroundings.

5. Maximize your quiet time with the Lord.

Have you been so anxious and worried lately? Come to Jesus. He will give you rest. Sit down and read passages from the Bible. Pray and bring Him everything that is out of our control. And while you’re at it, pray for people who are directly and indirectly affected by this crisis – from the sick, to the health workers and government officials. For the children, and the people who do not have the option to stay at home so they can put food on the table. Pray for unity and cooperation that we may overcome this crisis as a nation, as one humanity.

6. Reach out.

We may be limited by social distancing, but we can still reach out to those who are in most need at this difficult time of crisis. Your elderly neighbor may be too afraid to go to the grocery – help do the online shopping for them. Or give your house help a time to focus on their welfare by allowing them to go on paid leaves.

You can also donate to your trusted charities like World Vision which responds to COVID-19 emergency needs by providing sanitation kits to families in need, basic personal protective equipment (PPE) for medical workers and basic health facility disinfectant kits for affected communities. This can be done online within the confines of your home.

We pray that this situation will help us think deeper and teach us to focus on things that really matter – time, life, family, health, the welfare of others and most importantly, our faith and trust in God.
