Cotabato City – World Vision, the city government of Cotabato, schools, and other community stakeholders  pledged to strengthen efforts in reducing the city’s solid wastes through sustainable practices on recycling and upcycling last week.

The project, Enhancing Solid Waste Management Practices through the Adoption of Circular Economy Model, will be implemented in several communities and schools in Cotabato City.

“This initiative will provide livelihood opportunities through recycling, educating youth, introducing alternative means for managing biodegradable waste, ongoing advocacy for waste reduction and recycling via the Solid Waste Incentive Program, and integrating circular economy models tailored to Cotabato City’s context,” said Lyjim B. Aguipo, World Vision Project Coordinator.

Recycling breaks down materials and reuse it to create new products. Upcycling is reusing the same materials to create new products.

Meanwhile, community and government representatives expressed their excitement for the project during the project launch.

Engr. Hanalyn M. Bucol of  the City Environment and Natural Resources Officer (CENRO) said, “We are happy to accept this initiative. We share the same goal to further improve our solid waste management.”

On the other hand, Ms. Bai Rojana Sinsuat, Assistant Schools Division Superintendent of Cotabato City, stressed the collective responsibility among the community saying that it takes a village to educate a child.

She said, “Now, it takes a village to take action against global warming. We have to take responsibility and accountability for our actions. We are hoping and praying for more partnerships for the welfare and safety of our people, especially our Bangsamoro learners who will be our hope for tomorrow.”

Student Jahrene Jade, 12 years old, said, “From a young age, understanding the importance of reducing wastes is crucial to protect our environment for the next generations, and promotes community health and sanitation.” Last year, the Commission on Audit called on the Cotabato City government to act on its garbage problem that contributes to flooding during the rainy season.
