A beauty pageant for pregnant mothers

Mrs. Odessa Narag, a pregnant mother from Mangatarem, Pangasinan won the search for Ms. Pretty Preggy, beauty pageant participated by pregnant mothers.

Mrs. Narag, who also won Best in Talent, Long Gown, and Casual Wear is an early favorite among the crowd of pregnant mothers who came from Pangasinan towns of Urbiztondo, Aguilar, Labrador, Bugallon, Mangatarem and Lingayen City.

What I love about her is when she brought her husband during the talent portion. It shows how supportive they are for each other. They will likely be a good parent to their stillborn child,” Danna Villar, a World Vision staff and part of the panel of judges, says.

Jeziel Rosal, from Lingayen City, is first runner-up and won the Preggy Smile award. On the other hand, Bugallon town representative, Mrs. Jennie Molano, is second runner-up.

Attended by more than 350 pregnant mothers and health staff from Department of Health and Municipal/Barangay Health Offices, the beauty pageant is to celebrate and increase awareness on “Safe Motherhood” program of the Department of Health. Aside from the pageant, there were lectures on handwashing, blood donation, and care of the newborn, among others.

Kevin Fernandez, a registered nurse and health staff from the Department of Health, advice pregnant mothers to have a regular check-up every month to ensure that both mother and baby are healthy. “A pregnant mother must have a minimum of four check-ups in a year. But it would be much better if you could do monthly check-ups,” he says.

World Vision also provides pregnant kits for mothers that include maternity pads, baby dress, socks, and bonnets, among others.

Safe Motherhood Program is part of the Philippine government’s commitment to reduce deaths among mothers and under-five-year-old babies.

World Vision supports the Philippine government program through promotion and training on Infant and Young Child Feeding, Pinoy Nutrition Hub which addresses malnutrition, breastfeeding, and HIV and AIDS.
