Floods during Christmas break affected hundreds of families in Mindanao

Heavy rainfall brought massive floods in several parts of northern Mindanao since the Christmas eve, December 24, 2022.

Flash floods also affected West Misamis and Misamis Occidental areas, where World Vision’s area programmes presently implements various programs for children.

World Vision program manager Manuel Lim based in Cagayan de Oro shared, “Initial reports from our child monitors say nine registered families’ houses were totally damaged, we are hoping there’s no more addition to that number.” An estimated 900 World Vision-assisted children in the  provinces have been evacuated from their homes to safer grounds.

Due to the non-stop downpour even on Christmas day, the city of Gingoog in Misamis Oriental and the province of Misamis Occidental were declared under a state of calamity

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDDRMC) as of Wednesday. Dec. 28, recorded 25 people dead while 26 were reported missing due to the flashfloods.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), in its 11 a.m. weather advisory of Dec. 28, advised that heavy to intense rains may be experienced over Eastern Visayas in the next 24 hours. Heavy rains are also expected over Caraga, Northern Mindanao, Davao Region, Zamboanga, the rest of Visayas, as well as Bicol in Palawan in Luzon.  More flooding and landslides are likely expected.

 

World Vision teams continue to monitor and coordinate with the local governments and community partners on the running situation on ground.  In the Philippines, World Vision currently assists 62,000 children through its child-focused and community-based development programs nationwide.
