5 Simple Ways to Celebrate Christmas This Year
Christmas in the Philippines has never really been about the tree or the lights. It’s about who’s around the table. Between the parol on the window and the countdown to Noche Buena, the season keeps circling back to one thing: togetherness. Here are five simple ways to make fellowship the heart of your Christmas this year.
1. Make the table the centerpiece, not the gifts
Before the gift-opening, there’s the eating — and in most Filipino homes, that’s where the real magic happens. Set the table a little earlier this year. Let everyone help, from the youngest cousin folding napkins to the lola stirring the pancit. The prep is half the fellowship.
2. Revive one old-school tradition
Whether it’s Simbang Gabi, caroling around the block, or the aunties’ karaoke session after dinner, one small revived tradition can anchor the whole night. Pick one thing your family used to do and bring it back this year. It doesn’t have to be big to matter.

3. Set a place for someone outside your circle
A neighbor living alone, a friend who can’t go home this year, a kasambahay’s family—Filipino hospitality has always meant stretching the table further than blood relations. This Christmas, invite one more person than usual. It costs little and it means everything.
4. Trade screens for storytelling
After the meal, before everyone drifts to their phones, try one round of stories instead—favorite Christmas memories, embarrassing family moments, or simply “what are you thankful for this year.” For those who still have photo albums, now is a good time to bring them out and recall yesteryears. It’s a small shift that makes the night stick in memory.
5. Remember the families who won’t have a table set at all
For thousands of Filipino families, Christmas Eve isn’t a question of what to cook. It’s whether there will be anything to cook at all. This is where World Vision’s Noche Buena Campaign comes in.

Since 2006, World Vision Philippines has been helping put a proper Noche Buena spread on the table for families who otherwise wouldn’t have one—spaghetti, fruit salad, canned goods, and juice, enough for the whole family to share. Over nearly two decades, the campaign has delivered a total of more than 400,000 Noche Buena packs nationwide. This year, the goal is to reach more than 24,000 children and families across the country.
Because in the end, fellowship isn’t just something we practice at our own table. It’s something we can help extend to a table we’ll never see, for a family we may never meet—whose Christmas Eve will be a little fuller because of it.
