Maureen Miclat: A Hero of Hope for the Last Chance Kids

I am a mother & I know that these kids deserve a better future than the one they won’t get if people won’t care to help out.” –Maureen Miclat, World Vision child sponsor and advocate

These powerful words come from proud World Vision child sponsor of four, Maureen Miclat who already in less than one month has recruited 25 sponsors (and counting) for the Heroes of Hope Campaign.

The campaign began in August with hopes of finding 500 sponsors for the “last chance kids”. These World Vision children aged 13 and up have been waiting to be sponsored for many weeks, months and even years as they’ve been passed up getting the opportunity of being sponsored to younger and cuter looking children.

Simultaneous with the campaign’s launch over the internet, Maureen prayed that at least ten percent of these 500 children would be sponsored. Just as she had done before, she got busy writing letters and posting on the internet appeals to prospective sponsors.Maureen shares, “I realized then that I was doing this advocacy of mine, especially the children who need child sponsorships, a disservice by not sharing about it to people who might have the heart and the means to help. I have always believed that there are many people out there who are willing to help but just don’t know how.”

Finding and introducing World Vision to this particular group of people is exactly what Maureen has been doing effectively for years now. In her recent post entitled, “Why I Prod On” she shares "That is the beauty of caring. You give hope. You give the people you helped the desire to do good because you gave them a chance."

Maureen wasn’t always as vocal about child sponsorship until she realized one thing, “I used to feel uncomfortable (actually still am) telling people about my child sponsorship with World Vision. However, I realized that this was not about me, this was about the children who without people being made aware of their plight & how it takes so little to help change a life.”Maureen Miclat: A Hero of Hope for the Last Chance Kids

First learning of World Vision from the book, “12 Little Things a Filipino Can Do to Help our Country” authored by Atty. Alex Lacson, stories of renowned journalist Karen Davila and seeing World Vision in the malls, Maureen and her family decided to sponsor a child. As years went by, they family added more sponsored children to their list. Being a family of four, each of them now has a child to sponsor. She shares of their experience, “Child sponsorship has made me realize that it does not take much to reach out & help change someone’s life. All it takes is the heart & a commitment to do something for another person out there.”

The number of last chance kids getting sponsored continues to increase thanks to the untiring efforts of noble advocates such as Maureen who shares her answered prayer,” I was asking God for 10% of these Last Chance Kids to be sponsored. As of last count, it seems God has granted my simple wish. That in itself is a miracle.”

Though many last chance children have found sponsors, there are still many more that need sponsors. If you too would like to sponsor a child or advocate for a last chance kid, be a Hero of Hope
